Amstrad E3

Yesterday, I finally got around to building a serial cable to connect my Amstrad E3 up to a PC serial port. Various people are working on trying to get all the the hardware supported by Linux for this device. http://www.earth.li/~noodles/hardware-e3.html has up-to-date information about the project. Due to my uselessness in interpreting serial cables it took me a while to get it working (due to transposing TX and RX). For reference - my cable (9-Pin D Female) has the following connections:
  • Pin 2 - Tip
  • Pin 3 - Ring
  • Pin 5 - Sleeve
and works at least as far as seeing messages from PBL. This episode served to remind me how much I hate minicom, and I was pleased to be told of the existance of cu which is a little simpler for the purpose of testing. I had success with the command.
cu -l /dev/ttyS1 -s 115200 -e -o
